CHALLENGE
- < 1% of footwear is recycled
- The majority of shoes is incinerated or landfilled at their end of life
- Uncertain role of retail for take-back and recycling
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
- Pilot in-store take-back of used non-reusable footwear in Munich
- Test consumer acceptance under ideally designed conditions (financial incentives, clear value-add of the initiative)
- Send collected shoes to recycling
OUTCOME
- Shoes collected and recycled
- Tested & evaluated customer acceptance of bringing back used shoes to retail stores
- Insights on role of retail in collection and recycling, relevant for upcoming EPR system
