From challenge to circular transition

CHALLENGE

  • 98 % of global supply of permanent magnets relies on China and is increasingly weaponized as geoeconomic leverage
  • Recycling could support up to 50 % of EU supply, yet current rates are close to 0 % and  demand signals remain low due to lack of blueprints and economies of scale

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  • Manufacture magnet prototypes for EV and linear/servo motors with EU recycled content
  • Assess technical feasibility for higher recycling rates as base for purchasing decisions, offtake agreements and long-term partnerships

OUTCOME

  • Recycling-based permanent magnets available Q4/26 for testing by OEMs and Tier-1s
  • Creation of a European recycling and processing value chain for rare earth elements and further increase of copper recycling incl. recyclers, component manufacturers, Tier-1s and OEMs

CIRCULAR TRANSITION

  • Overcoming unclear demand, limited supply and processing bottlenecks, the project contributes to creating a European recycling and processing value chain for rare earth elements and further increase of copper recycling
  • Economic, geopolitical and massive environmental benefits go hand in hand
